Winter is one of the easiest times to discover heat loss in your house. In fact, it's something that you - as the homeowner - might have discovered at yourself.

How do you know if your home needs more blown-in insulation (without crawling up in the attic)?

There are 6 ways we can tell if your home needs more blown-in insulation:

1. Check to see how long it takes for the snow to melt on your roof. Once it snows, the snow should not melt right away. Seeing the snow melt quickly means that your roof is allowing too much heat to escape. Melting snows is a sign of heat loss.

2. Inconsistent temperatures in your home may suggest poor insulation, incorrect installation, or the need for replacement.

3. Drafty rooms could indicate air leaks. You can use a candle to test suspected areas; if the smoke is drawn in, there's likely an air leak. Light a candle, and then blow it out. The smoke should follow the draft.

4. Ice dams may form when snow on your roof melts due to rising attic heat, allowing liquid water to flow down. In cold temperatures, this can look like an over-growth of thick icicles.

5. Unexpectedly high energy bills might signal your HVAC system overcompensating for energy loss. Small leaks lead to minor cost increases, while larger ones could be more costly in the long run.

6. We can check for you! While the above ideas are great things you can try on your own, we are more than happy to come check for you.

How do we add more insulation to your home?

We typically access your attic through a garage or a roof access panel. On rare occasions, we might need to access the attic from the roof directly.

What if we find an abundance of insulation in my roof? Attics can be over-filled with insulation. If this is the case, we'll politely decline your hard earned money.

Too much insulation AND heat loss usually means there are other problems with your home (improper sealant around vents/openings, drafty window, or gaps around doors).
